Our extra virgin olive oil is produced on a small farm near Lyons, Georgia. We have been growing a selection of olive trees for 10 years using high density farming techniques. We have selected 5 varieties that produce well in our humid climate: 2 Greek, 2 Spanish and 1 Italian variety. The olives grow throughout summer and are then harvested and pressed in the fall. In 2014, we won a Gold Medal from the New York International Olive Oil Competition. Professional tasters describe our oil as having “Aromas of ripe fruit, green grass, dried fruit, banana and notes of herbs, tomato. Taste exhibits abundant fruitiness, green grass, sweetness, some bitterness, medium pungency and notes of butter, banana, with exceptional harmony, a high complexity and a high persistence.” The mild flavor pairs well with lighter dishes, cheese and fruit. Baby Monstera. Another gem in the Aroid family, Baby Monstera is a collectible tropical similar in scale and growth habit to Monstera Adansonii (Swiss Cheese). Although called a Monstera and similar to M. deliciosa, with open finistration, it is actually from a different genus: Rhaphidophora. Like Swiss Cheese, Baby Monstera makes a gorgeous hanging basket when it gets longer. But, like many Aroids, climbing is its happy place, where it will produce larger leaves. In the tropical forest, it appears perched high on horizontal tree limbs like a brilliant green crown, with a skirt of dead fronds. This one is uniquely mounted on a 58” piece of Ogeechee River driftwood, with a wire attached on the back, ready for hanging on a wall or fence. Place in bright shade and soak with water about twice a week. Bring inside when temperature goes down to 40 degrees. A bright bathroom or kitchen is a good alternative happy place. Asplenium nidus.

“Brazil” is a variegated and robust variety of the popular Heartleaf Philo, adding wedges of chartreuse to the leaves. Heartleaf Philo varieties are known for their ease of care and propagation. They make beautiful trailing pots and baskets. But when encouraged to climb and attach, many members of this family shift into a higher gear, producing larger leaves. Although Philodendrons are known to do well in low-light situations, bright indirect light will help to maintain vivid color (as is the case with most plants). Good drainage, moderate water. Ponytail Palm. Beaucarnea recurvata. Native of Eastern Mexico, Ponytail is known for its relatively huge base, which slopes up gently to form a trunk. Not a palm, but a member of the asparagus family—usually a single trunk, with a flourish of weeping hair-like leaves flowing down from the top. Often, when plants have bulbous parts (roots, stems, or leaves), they are for storing water, and likely need water less often than other plants. One article says for this plant, it is good to adapt your watering habits to its actual needs. Ponytails enjoy well-draining soil in a pot only slightly bigger than its base. Bright, BRIGHT light for this one. But indirect light is best. I have a Statesboro friend who had one of these for many years. It was something like 8’ tall, with a base about 30” across, and about 1” of soil showing between the plant and the pot.

Sego Palms are living fossils dating back to the time of dinosaurs. The grace of its foliage—often used dramatically in floral arrangements—betrays its wirey toughness. Compact at first, then as plants mature in ten or so years, they may develop a trunk that can be several feet tall, and with fronds six feet across. Female plants eventually have a “nest” in the middle, where seeds form. Male plants send up flower stalks a few inches in diameter and three or more feet tall. These babies come from buds that form on the trunks of mature plants, but plants also are geminated from the seeds. NOTE: Sego seeds are toxic to animals. While they are not prone to fall or spread easily, it is good to keep an eye out. Segos make beautiful accent plants, and do well in pots--needing very little space.

Delicate and whimsical. Trailing vine is good in a basket as well as a pot. Bright shade, inside or out. Keep moist, but drained. This plant has survived freezing temps in some more protected places in my yard. A tip for vining plants: Periodically cut the longest and straggliest pieces above the rim of the pot, poke a hole in the soil, and insert pieces of the vine.
