Bamia - Okra Stew with Lamb

This is an old Middle-Eastern recipe served with short grained rice. The meat and okra are never made at the same time, meat is always made first or even in a separate pot, then later added together. You’ll get mushy okra if you cook them together at the same time.

Butterbeans with Rosemary and Garlic

I wonder if many of us realize how fortunate we are that we are STILL able to get fresh butter beans at our Market? They are labor intensive and many farmers do not have the help to pick them so they no longer grow them. BUT we do have them at Market2Go and at the Mainstreet Farmers Market on Sat…for awhile! Please try some of this valuable bean. Here is a different recipe to tempt you! If you do not see them one week check back the next….the season goes through mid to late July and sometimes there is another late planting for early fall beans. Thank goodness our farmers persevere for us!

Buttermilk-Lady Pea Soup with Bacon

This recipe from Southern Living calls for Lady peas, but other field peas like Sadandy, pink-eye, and zipper peas can be substituted.
Even served warm, buttermilk has a cooling effect on the palate, just right for summer meals.
Goes well with cornbread.

Çoban salatası or Shepherd's salad

This dish has lots of names and variations- Choban salad, Mediterranean salad, Israeli salad, Vegetable salad, Shirazi salad, to name a few.

Some recipes omit the pepper. Some use mint instead of the parsley or some use both. Some use lemon juice instead of vinegar. The amount of each vegetable and size adjusted from chopped, diced or minced according to taste and preference.

Extra Veggie Marinara

If you happen to be a canner this is a great marinara to put by. I have to warn that it is slightly time intensive, maybe 3 hours + canning and processing. On the other hand, if you want a way to get kids, or adults, to eat their veggies and never know it this is a great recipe. If you want to use your surplus of random veggies from the garden like tomatillos, eggplant, or squash then this is an adaptable recipe for you. If you are looking for a complex, flavorful dish then look no more. I hope you will find this garden fresh recipe as worth while as I do. Great over pasta for a vegetarian dish or serve this with my Italian Meatballs on a delicious meatball sub!

Fresh Corn Cakes

Fried Green Tomatoes

A Southern classic dish. You need unripe, firm green tomatoes for this, not red tomatoes. Some recipes call for dipping the tomato slices in egg or buttermilk before dredging in the cornmeal.
